Eran tiempos en los que el joven gobierno comunista apenas tenía contacto con países extranjeros, y fue ella quien se convertiría en la maest…ra de la primera generación de hispanistas, entre los que se encuentran políticos, embajadores, investigadores y famosos traductores, como el catedrático Dong Yansheng, a quien se debe la mejor traducción de El Quijote al chino. Precisamente del profesor Dong son estas palabras referidas a Lecea: Su imagen se ha sellado perennemente en el alma de todos los chinos que hemos tenido la suerte de conocerla.ö María Lecea dejó el país asiático con destino a Argelia en 1964, siguiendo con su tarea de difusión de la lengua y la cultura españolas lejos de su amada Pekín, a donde tuvo ocasión de regresar en 1984 para reanudar su fértil dedicación de puente cultural entre China y España, añadiendo a su tarea docente un intenso trabajo de traducción de algunos textos clásicos chinos desde el francés al español, como el clásico de Shitao (1642-1707) Discurso acerca de la pintura por el monje Calabaza Amarga, previamente traducida al francés por Pierre Ryckmans y con modélica edición española de la propia María Lecea, volumen que abrió la colección dedicada por la EUG a la literatura sínica. Allí permanecería hasta que en 1989 (año en el que fue testigo de los históricos sucesos de la plaza de Tian-an-men), regresa definitivamente a España. El reconocimiento a su encomiable trabajo le llegaría en 1986, cuando se le otorgó la Encomienda de Alfonso X el Sabio por su labor en la difusión de la lengua, la literatura y la cultura españolas, en un merecido homenaje al que ahora se une la publicación de estas memorias de quien tanta entrega y pasión puso en que el pueblo chino y el español se conocieran un poco mejor.
