Hardcover. 2nd printing. 98 p.; 18.5 cm. [First printed in 1946] `In concluding the brief study,we mayask whether Hooker gave a clear answer to the pressing problem of his day, namely, the basis of authority in Church and State. The Puritans' basis was scripture; and had their discipline prevailed, the results would have been disastrous, not only in religion and politics, but also in the intellectual sphere. Such a foundation was too narrow to support what must become,in a theocracy, the whole superstructure of national life. The future was not destined to give them this opportunity, but the Puritan contribution to national life, although not so far-reaching as it was once intended to be,hasyet been of great value. On the other hand, Hooker had no clear-cut doctrine of authority either in Church or State,be- cause he realized the problem was too complex to allow an easy and a facile solution. But it cannot be denied that he regarded authority in both spheres as being broad-based and, consequently, capable of development. Society to him was an organism, the result of growth and always changing. Scripture, reason, consent, the law of nature, and the experience enshrined in tradition, have all a bearing on the problem of authority. The answer is complex, and will not satisfy the man who demands his politics orhis theology in sharply contrasted vivid colours. In brief, the spirit of Anglicanism, which Hooker did so much to create, is a complex phenomenon, and its nature may account for Bishop Henson's description of the Church of England as the Church of the educated. The extremists and the impatient stigmatize it as compromise, but those who know their Hooker will see far more in it than this.' (97 f.) VG orig. orange-brown cloth. Prior owner's signature on ffep.

Softcover. 111 p.; 18 cm. Contents -- Foreword -- The pre-Norman diocese of Llandaff, R. W. D. (Roy William Dearnley) Fenn -- The medieval diocese of Llandaff, William Greenway -- The age of the reformation, Derrick G. Childs -- From the restoration to disestablishment, E. T. Davies -- Disestablishment and after, J. G. (John Gwynno) James -- Index. -- `The thre main characteristics of the Celtic Church in Wales were its Liturgy, its method of calculating the date of Easter, and its tonsure. The Liturgy of the Welsh Church had come from Asia Minor by way of Milan, and its main distinction was that Baptism and Confirmation were both administered in infancy by the priest. The Chrism in Confirmation was not restricted to the episcopate, though the priest would use oil which had been consecrated by a bishop which is, orf course, still the custom of the Greek Orthodox Church to-day. Its method of calculating Easter had been settled by the Council of Arles in 314, but when this system was modified on the Continent the Celtic Church was not informed of the change, with the consequent result that Good Friday and Easter were frequently observed on different dates from the rest of the Church. The Celtic tonsure was probably native in origin: it was neither Greek nor Roman, and the Welsh monks shaved neither the whole head nor the crown of the head, but instead they removed a semicircle of hair from the front. Wales being a tribal country had a tribal Church, at least in its organization. It knew nothing of parishes or dioceses in the modern sense. Each kingdom was divided into cantrefs.'
