Copy 316 of 755 (900) bound in stiff maroon card covers, outer wrapper of grey paper with title printed in red and black to the front and spine. Gwasg Gregynog's 'Descriptive Catalogue' is an elegant and most generous production, well known for representing outstanding value for money in its standard edition as here. The Catalogue is an essential reference for understanding the modern revival of the Press and its achievements although the continuing absence of a second volume covering the post-1990 years is keenly felt. This copy distinguished by David Esslemont's signature, which is not normally present. Near Fine (slight fading around the edges of the cover, and a tiny liquid stain near the cover title). Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 31x21cm, 74pp. With forty-one illustrations in various colours taken from Gwasg Gregynog publications, and multiple tipped-in specimens. Copy 769 of 100 (900) bound in quarter-grey leather with gilt rule over grey paper-covered boards, title in gilt to backstrip with red dot, in a slipcase of pale taupe cloth-covered boards with wooden edges, grey leather to head and foot of entry, later inscription by David Esslemont in ink dated 15 November MM below the colophon, press compliments card laid-in. Gwasg Gregynog's 'Descriptive Catalogue' is an elegant and most generous production, well-known for representing outstanding value for money in its standard edition in card covers. However, it really deserved a more substantial hardback binding, and this scarce special limitation addresses that need, transforming the book into something altogether more luxurious (without having to consider the the stratospheric heights of the 'designer' special binding limitation of 25 copies). This copy is further distinguished by David Esslemont's personal inscription and signature below the colophon. The Catalogue is an essential reference for understanding the modern revival of the Press and its achievements although the continuing absence of a second volume covering the post-1990 years is keenly felt. Fine (in fact Mint) with a Good (entirely sound and unworn but with a few tiny marks and an old liquid stain at the foot, of which there is no trace in the interior, neither of course to the book). Signed by Author(s).…

Hardcover. One of ten copies specially bound for Oak Knoll Books. Red boards with informational pamphlet (7 pp.) inside front cover. 17 b+w prints from engravings. Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was born in the north of England at Cherryburn, on the south bank of the river Tyne, twelve miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, a general engraver in Newcastle. Ten years later he formed a partnership with Beilby. Wood engraving was only a small part of the business and the majority of the work involved engraving inscriptions and decorations on a wide variety of objects such as guns, dog collars, harness, clock faces, rings, cutlery, and the engraving of banknotes, billheads and even bookbinders' tools and letters. Bewick is best known for his wood engravings in his two works of natural history: "A General History of Quadrupeds" and "A History of British Birds, Vol I Land Birds, Vol II Water Birds" VG+ Exlib with stickers on spine and back cover.…

Hardcover. Limited Edition/Unique. Limited Edition/Unique. Hardcover. Conversations between David Esslemont & Gaylord Schanilec. Bound by David Esslemont. With an extra suite of the 15 color linocuts [one dup] titled and signed [some numered, some AP]. There are 6 original leaves tipped in: 4 from Esslemont's books and 2 from Schanilec's, including a 4-page leaf with color engraving of Manhattan from New York Revisited. ". . . an edited summary of their conversations over the past four years, telling of domestic problems . . . of printers' problems: of getting in materials, of making the presses work, of which inks to use." Shoulder notes clarify what might be obscure. Esslemont's visits to the Schanilec home in Wisconsin provided the inspiration for his color linocuts; Schanilec's visits and 6-month stay in Wales resulted in the 33-inch color engraving of the Esslemont homestead. A unique iteration of this relatively early work. Includes laid in note from Esslemont explaining history and location of other copies, and an additional suite of signed plates found only with this copy. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Full white alum-tawed goatskin, laminated bevelled boards, painting in acrylic ink, paste graining, and gold tooling, pastepaper flyleaves [inspired by the birch trees in Schanilec's yard]; housed in black cloth fleece lined drop-spine case, printed paper label at spine. 4to. 153pp. Illus. (14 color linocuts by Esslemont, 3 color wood engravings by Schanilec (including a 33-inch folding panorama), 10 tipped-in color ink jet images, and 6 original leaves). Numbered limited edition of 10 copies, this being 4 [entire run is 200]. Signed by both author/artists. This is the only copy to have the extra suite of plates. No. I of 10 special copies each bound individually by David Esslemont, there were 300 ordinary copies. Over 300 wood engravings by David Gentleman, mainly printed from the original blocks. Printed in Monotype Baskerville on Zerkall mould-made paper. Oblong 4to., original painted white alum-tawed goatskin binding using yellow, black, pink and red acrylics with gilt tooling, in the original black cloth box with an extra folder containing five signed prints by Gentleman, a set of his stamps and two of his covers for Penguin Books. An extremely good copy. With an introduction by Fiona Maccarthy. Inserted loose is a letter from David Esslemont presenting this first special copy which describes his binding process: "My design is loosely based on a detail from one of the Charing Cross engravings [the engravings on which the designs in Charing Cross underground station are based]. The broad fields of colour echo DG's own use of colour as in the postage stamps and book covers. I have created the design in my favoured white alum-tawed goatskin using stencils and the old toothbrush in places - with acrylic inks.".…
