Bound in the original gray cloth, stamped in black on the spine. From the dust jacket: "In recent decades the experiences and political struggles of immigrants, exiles, and sojourners have inspired some of the most provocative feature films and documentaries in world cinema. These have sparked theoretical debates about cultural identity, place, and representation in the media. The thirteen essays in this anthology contribute to a growing interest in the emerging international genre of exile and diaspora films, treating a variety of motion pictures from Europe and the United States in their national and transnational contexts. These essays examine how contemporary cinema -- both fiction feature film and documentary -- has imagined the experience of migration and displacement, the struggle for citizenship and cultural belonging, and the encounter and negotiation of different cultures and identities. The authors discuss the ways cinema explores the many contradictions of exile and diaspora -- the complicated meanings of home, the exile's nostalgia for origins, the hopes and tragedies of border crossings, the difficulties of belonging to a strange society and being a stranger, and the conundrums of gender for the migrant, especially women's conciliation of different social roles and cultural expectations. Included are discussions of such well known films as THE CRYING GAME, LAMERICA, JOURNEY OF HOPE, EXOTICA, CHOCOLAT, LONE STAR, and FLYING DOWN TO RIO, as well as smaller productions by diasporic or immigrant filmmakers who deserve critical attention, including Seyhan Derin's I'M MY MOTHER'S DAUGHTER, Mina Shum's DOUBLE HAPPINESS, and Yanina Benguigui's IMMIGRANT MEMORIES: MAGHREBI HERITAGE. Encompassing different models of intercultural theory, this collection draws on the fields of anthropology, political economy, production and reception studies, feminism, travel writing, and postcolonial criticism and captures the complex, diverse, and continually changing body of diaspora film and its intertextual connections. Eva Rueschmann is an assistant professor of cultural studies at Hampshire College, the author of SISTERS ON THE SCREEN: SIBLINGS IN CONTEMPORARY CINEMA, and a contributor to two anthologies, INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S WRITING: NEW LANDSCAPES OF IDENTITIES and THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SIBLING RELATIONSHIPS IN LITERATURE.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. New/New. 8vo. xxx, 265pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Since his now famous appearance on the literary stage in 1968 novelist, playwright and poet Peter Handke has remained on the forefront of the literary vanguard, having earned the praise and recognition of critics in Europe and North America alike. In fact in a review essay of September 2000 The New York Review of Books called him 'the premier prose stylist in the German language, and one of post-war Europe's most recognisable literary figures'. Since the publication of his early theatrical works, Handke has gone on to publish over twenty-five prose novels as well as additional works for the theatre, collections of poetry, diaries and essays. His works have ranged in style from the French influenced nouveau roman of the late 1960s to works characteristic of the New Subjectivity movement in West Germany in the 1970s, while his novels and stories of the 1980s and 1990s exhibited a new-found appreciation for narrative and issues of storytelling. He has also published a series of polemical essays on the war in Yugoslavia which have been criticised severely by scholars and intellectuals. This collection of fourteen essays focuses both on the genres in which Handke has written as well as on the thematic aspects of his work. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Abbas Khider (b. 1973) has established himself as one of the leading literary voices of refugees and marginalised communities in Germany today. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Khider was at a young age a vocal critic of Saddam Husseins regime, during which he was jailed and tortured before fleeing the country. As a refugee, he crossed many countries before arriving in Germany, where he was eventually granted asylum. His own life experiences have served as a departure point for his novels, which similarly explore the refugee experience and the challenges that migrants to Europe face. This volume represents the first collection of essays devoted to Khiders works to date. The contributions analyse his narrative works and probe important questions relating to political, cultural, and linguistic identity in Germany today. While his works explore what it means to be an immigrant, they do so with a wry sense of humour and an insight into the human condition that also reflect on the political situation in Germany today. His award-winning novels, including Der falsche Inder (2008, The Village Indian, 2013) and Ohrfeige (2016, A Slap in the Face, 2019), which have been translated into English, are discussed in detail. Additionally, an original interview with the author offers insight into his writing process and influences.
