  • [52] pp.; 21 x 24 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unkown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Two volume exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with two-part show held March 14 ? May 18, 2014 and May 25 ? August 3. "Other Primary Structures revisited the premise of and built upon the Museum''s seminal 1966 exhibition Primary Structures: Younger American and British Sculptors, the first American museum exhibition to survey the style now known as Minimalism. Primary Structures introduced the public to such artists as Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Walter De Maria, Robert Morris, and others--figures unknown at the time but soon to become synonymous with a radically new approach to sculpture. Nearly 50 years later, Other Primary Structures revisits this formative moment in art history while also reexamining the period from today''s far more global perspective. "Presented in two parts, the first part of the exhibition titled Others 1, examined work created between 1960 and 1967, while Others 2, on view from May 25 ? August 3, presented work created between 1967 and 1970, some of which was directly influenced by the 1966 Primary Structures exhibition at the Jewish Museum." -- publisher''s statement. This publication includes a faithful reprint of the original 1966 catalogue published in conjunction with show held April 27 - June 12, 1966. Essay by exhibition''s curator Kynaston McShine. Includes works by Carl Andre, David Annesley, Richard Artschwager, Larry Bell, Ronald Bladen, Michael Bolus, Anthony Caro, Tony DeLap, Walter de Maria, Tom Doyle, Dan Flavin, Peter Forakis, Paul Frazier, Judy Gerowitz, Daniel Gorski, David Gray, Robert Grosvenor, David Hall, Douglas Huebler, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Phillip King, Lyman Kipp, Gerald Laing, Sol LeWitt, John McCracken, Tina Matkovic, Robert Morris, Forrest Myers, Peter Phillips, Peter Pinchbeck, Salvatore Romano, Tim Scott, Anthony Smith, Robert Smithson, Michael Todd, Anne Truitt, William Tucker, Richard Van Buren, David von Schlegell, Isaac Witkin and Derrick Woodham. A seminal exhibition. Catalogue incorporates statements by many of the participating artists along with bibliographies and biographies. Catalogue design by Elaine Lustig Cohen. The second volume includes text by Jens Hoffmann and excerpts from the transcript of a symposium, "The New Sculpture," held May 2, 1966. SYNOPSIS: Gordon Sinclair was a journalist and broadcaster known to three generations of Canadians. People either loved him or hated him--or loved to hate him--but no one ignored him. Now, Scott Young, a well-known writer and broadcaster himself, has written the first full biography of a colourful personality, the absolute antithesis of the so-called "quiet Canadian". Gordon Sinclair: A Life.and Then Some traces Gordon's life from his school-days in east Toronto through his first clerking jobs in the old Bank of Toronto and Eaton's, his early reporting during the 1920s, and his globe-trotting days during the 1930s and '40s, to his fame as the media spokesman for all those who hated authority. Gordon's natural skills as a storyteller became evident soon after he got a job as cub-reporter at the Toronto Star. But his first big break came when he spent a week "riding the rails" with hobos from southern Ontario to New York state. His stories, full of insight and adventure, seemed to contain just the details that readers wanted to know. Sinclair spent many years travelling and reporting to the Star from around the globe. He wrote books of travel and adventure that sold to wide acclaim and won outstanding reviews. But it was only natural that Sinclair, always ready for a challenge, should snatch the opportunity to leave print and enter the broadcast media when the chance arose. Beginning in 1944, his newscasts and Let's Be Personal commentary on Toronto's CFRB reached unprecedented audiences. And from his "resident curmudgeon" spot on TV's long-running Front-Page Challenge, Sinclair reached an eager, nation-wide audience. A Life. is more than just work. Scott Young, assisted by full and sometimes startling revelations by the Sinclair family, describes Sinclair the private man, who suffered frequent bouts of depression; and Sinclair the free-thinker, who had several affairs, including one that lasted from 1939 until his death, and a brief fling with evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. Yet, despite his sometimes selfish and often cantankerous ways, Sinclair was a man whom people loved because he spoke--straight from the shoulder. Scott Young has successfully pursued careers as a writer, broadcaster, and journalist. He won his first National Newspaper Award in 1959, which was followed by other national and international awards. At the same time, he was writing short stories and novels, three of which were translated into Russian. Altogether, Young has written over 35 books. In 1984, he published Neil and Me, the biography of his son, one of Canada's most famous rock musicians. His biography of Foster Hewitt entitled Hello Canada! (1985) was welcomed by Canadians from coast to coast. Mr. Young and his wife, writer and editor Margaret Hogan, live on an acreage north of Toronto, where they are often visited by the sons and daughters of their extended and extensive family. Scott Young has shown an uncanny ability to write about the people that matter to ordinary Canadians. By writing about our own home-grown heroes and spokespersons, Young himself has become something of a spokesman for Canadians. His book on Gordon Sinclair is a major contribution to his continuing role as chronicler of Canadian popular culture. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

He had numerous solo exhibitions since and his works feature in the Tate Collection and those of other major galleries. His work is known for his open-form, metal-welded geometric shapes, often inspired by his national service experiences in the RAF or influenced by the American Color Field painter, Kenneth Nolan.
