Bernard Lang, author of a "volume of happy memories", A Fisherman's Tales and Adventures (1935), about his fishing in France, Devon, and Ireland, writes to Derrydale publisher and angling author Eugene V. Connett from Vence in the Alpes Maritimes in the south of France, briefly discussing his health concerns (pulmonary T.B.) before turning to angling matters. "I should not talk of giving up fishing . I've told my secretary in London to send you another little book. . A London publisher, Foulsham, . asked if I would write a cheap handbook in the subject. Now I'm a reasonably modest individual & a very humble member of the Fly Fishers' Club so my first reaction was to say no. However I asked an old fishing friend & neighbour named Reid if he would collaborate under a nom de plume. We did so and called ourselves L. Angreid. On publication it was so well received the F.G. gave it a column & a half of undiluted praise that we now blushingly acknowledge parenthood. . I wonder if, when you see it you'd think it worth re-printing in America." Lang (born 1881), who was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps in the first world war, continues, discussing memories of Col. E.W. Harding, author of The Flyfisher & The Trout's Point of View (1931) and a correspondence with Raymond Hill, author of Wings and Hackle (1912). He recalls success fishing upstream with wet flies "when the dry fly & the wet fly downstream caught nothing. Of course though the term nymphing had not then been invented I was really nymphing." Evidently in response to an earlier comment from Connett, Lang comments on strategies for fishing the Brodhead. Lang had written Connett after a friend gave him one of Connett's books (perhaps Fishing a Trout Stream) for Christmas. "It made me feel better at once & I may say it went round the Sanatorium to about half a dozen others of both sexes, some fishermen, some not & was thoroughly enjoyed." (The letter from the secretary in London conveying the booklet is present; but the booklet itself is not, and there is no evidence Connett reprint the book.) "An Introduction to Fly Fishing" by L. Angreid was first published in 1937 in Foulsham's Sport Library and was reprinted regularly through the 1960s. If the book is remembered today, it is sometimes ascribed to Alexander William Douglas Reid, the "old fishing friend" and the other half of the pseudonym. A discursive and fascinating letter. Cf.
