Dives into all aspects of their journey, including the plant and animal life, the weather, the terrain, and the various peoples that they meet. Broken up into chapters where the group explores a specific area, most of which were under-explored or undocumented. Written as half educational report, half wilderness adventure. The author's attitude towards Native Americans is less than stellar, influenced by the fact that they were not yet considered citizens at the time of publication. **AUTHOR and conservationist/zoologist William Temple Hornaday(1854-1937) is a prolific figure known for his controversial ideas and fierce defense of the buffalo. Growing up in Avon, Indiana, Hornaday went to both Oskaloosa College and the Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University). He then travelled across the world before being appointed chief taxidermist of the United States National Museum. From here he started his efforts to protect the dwindling buffalo population from overhunting. To pursue this further, Hornaday left the National Museum to become the first director of the New York Zoological Park, known today as the Bronx Zoo. Traveling across the country, he witnessed many natural wonders and events that he translated into his many books, seeking to both promote his cause for conservation, and entertain a wide audience.
