Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book of memoirs shares personal and professional recollections of Dr. Daniel M. Burgess, a surgeon in the United States Army during the Civil War. Hailing from a prominent American family that emigrated from England in the seventeenth century, Dr. Burgess narrates his upbringing on his family's farm, his early education, and his studies in medicine, including his experiences as an externe at Bellevue Hospital and as a ship's surgeon. He also recounts his travels throughout Europe, South America and Asia, providing vivid descriptions of the places he visited and the adventures he encountered along the way. Of particular interest is Dr. Burgess's detailed account of his 18 month stay in the high altitude Andes Mountains of Peru, where he practiced medicine and traveled extensively on horseback and muleback. His wartime experiences are also recounted, including his service as an army surgeon and his close encounter with death during the Battle of Bull Run. Written in the latter part of his life, this book offers a captivating and personal glimpse into the life and times of a Civil War-era physician and surgeon and provides valuable insights into the history of medicine, travel, and the social and political landscape of the mid-19th century.
