The author argues that these Reformers drew inspiration from both British principles and the American Revolution while recognizing the dangers of rebellion. They were more imperialistic than the British themselves, believing in the strength of the empire and its principles. The book explores Howe's belief in the essential justice of the British government and his distrust of the motives of the Lower Canadian Reformers, a position that would later be vindicated when rebellion broke out in the Canadas. The author concludes that while Lord Durham's mission strengthened the Reformers' position, it was their own efforts, inspired by British principles, that ultimately won responsible government for Nova Scotia.
