Der am 1. Mai 19o8 in Fontanelle di Rocca Bianca/Parma geborene volkstümlichste italienische Humorist ist seit dem 18. Lebensjahr journalistisch tätig, arbeitete aber unter anderem auch als Werbezeichner, Karikaturist, Lehrer und Pförtner, ehe er Chefredakteur der Mailänder Wochenzeitung «Bertoldo» und Leiter des politischen Witzblattes «Candido» wurde. In letzterem veröffentlichte er zunächst seine politisch-satirischen Schelmengeschichten von «Don Camillo und Peppone», ehe sie in Buchform gesammelt zum Welterfolg in 27 Ländern wurden und eine Gesamtauflage von weit über 3 Millionen Exemplaren erreichten. Millionen sind so durch Buch und Film in einer sonst humorarmen Zeit zum Lachen gebracht worden. Guareschi erhielt zum Lohn dafür den Preis der «Goldenen Palme des Humors». Indessen brachte den in aller Welt Gefeierten eine zu gewagte journalistische Enthüllung für eine Weile ins Gefängnis. Der Fortsetzungsband «Don Camillo und seine Herde» (rororo Nr. 231) wurde mit dem italienischen «Bücherkarrenpreis» ausgezeichnet und ebenfalls verfilmt.
