Believe to be one of 6 large paper copies with the engraved plate bound before page.185 hand-coloured, as are also the printed armorial shields, and three additional engravings. The plates do not appear in the smaller 8vo edition.

This impressively illustrat…ed collection was first published in 1762, showcasing principal English artists, with a focus on painting. It is often considered to be the first comprehensive biographical study of the history of the arts in England. Walpole presents the lives and work of various prominent artists from different periods, including during the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Charles I, Charles II, George I and George II. Volume V serves as a catalogue of engravers who were born or resided in England during these periods. Wonderfully illustrated, with 88 illustrations on 80 plates, and 39 engravings. Comprised of 14 plates and 5 engravings to Volume I, 17 plates and 12 engravings to II, 17 plates and 13 engravings to III, 16 plates and 9 engravings to IV and sixteen plates to V. Collated, complete. Compiled by Horace Walpole, collected by George Vertue and with considerable additions from the Rev. James Dallaway.
