Little is known of his personal life except that he may have married Elizabeth Edwards, and that they had seven children. Doubts surround Roscoe's marital status: for example, his probate record states that he was a bachelor at the time of his death, and evidence from the Royal Literary Fund archives shows that a request for aid was dropped after two of his surviving daughters were unable to identify the place of marriage or produce a marriage certificate for their parents. His translations include works of scholarship: a History of the Literature of the South of Europe (4 vols., 1823) from the original by J. C. L. de Sismondi, a History of Painting in Italy (6 vols., 1828) from the original by L. A.
