From Introduction: Colorado is blessed with an abundance of relatively undisturbed pasture-land and forest, ranging in elevation from 3,500 feet on the plains to over 14,000 feet on mountain tops. These differing habitats offer a wide variety of vegetation, including mushrooms. We hope they may be led to parks, woods and meadows to pick their own choice morsels. Along the way they may come to enjoy collecting and classifying these interesting plants for their beauty, oddity and usual habits, thus adding new interest to hikes and picnics in outdoor Colorado. This booklet is not intended to be a comprehensive field guide. With pictures and brief descriptions we hope to enable a beginner to identify a few species of mushrooms, to offer the casual observer a quick look at this great division of plants and to increase the enjoyment of shady nook, forest glade and cool stream-=bank by pointing out some friends from the underworld of the plant kingdom to be encountered there. Against the advice of our artistic friends and advisers, we have placed a ruler in many pictures to add the concept of size to that of form and color. Though a species may vary greatly in size, we have depicted average specimens found in Colorado. We have used the scientific name followed by the common name if the mushroom has one. We have included recipes for people who wish to taste and try. A list of recipe books and references for those who wish to undertake a more serious and scientific study of fungi will be found on page 7. A discussion of mushroom poisons and poisoning is given on pages 40 and 41. Natural History, Colorado, Mushrooms, Foraging, Wild Edibles, Mushroom Hunting, Western Americana, American West. yslic.…

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. In 1677, James Mitchel, a radical Covenanter, was tried in Edinburgh for the attempted assassination of Dr James Sharp, Archbishop of St Andrews, and for wounding the Bishop of Orkney. The attack had occurred six years earlier, in 1668, when Mitchel fired a pistol at Sharp as he entered his coach, striking the Bishop instead. Mitchel evaded capture for some time but was eventually arrested and interrogated. He initially confessed under promise of leniency, but later retracted his admission when that assurance was denied. The trial, conducted before the Privy Council and later the Justiciary Court, hinged on the admissibility of his confession and the broader political tensions between the Crown and the Presbyterian underground. Mitchel was found guilty and executed, his case becoming emblematic of the fierce resistance to episcopacy and the harsh reprisals that followed. 28 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery.
