Add to basketCondition: Very Good. In the aftermath of the Battle of Worcester in 1651, the Commonwealth sought swift retribution against Royalist leaders who had rallied to Charles II's cause. Among them was James Stanley, Earl of Derby, a prominent commander in the north-west, captured after the defeat and brought before a court martial fo…r high treason. Tried alongside Sir Timothy Fetherstonhaugh and Captain John Benbow, Stanley was condemned for his role in raising arms against Parliament and for his part in the bloody defence of Lancashire. The proceedings were stark and unforgiving, emblematic of the Commonwealth's determination to extinguish Royalist resistance. Stanley was executed at Bolton, a town he had once besieged, lending a grim symmetry to his fate. 16 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on. Softcover (Booklet - Unbound Pages).

At the end of the poem is the manuscript note ?J.C. Hyer. Corii? Bound in modern quarter vellum with gilt title on spine. Some pale browning and light foxing. Unknown neo-Latin poem o…f 69 verses, addressed to a friend named Enea Silvio Polenta, cook and poet, by the anonymous author, probably identifiable with Girolamo Corio (or Coiro), who was appointed as Bishop of Parma on 2 May 1650 and served until his death on 26 July 1651. The poem recounts a scam carried out against Ranuccio I Farnese, the Duke of Parma, by Armenian merchants who presented themselves at court as expert jewellers. They were so persuasive in their account of their skills that the duke unwisely entrusted his gems to them to be set, and they fled with the treasure. Later, the duke happened to read with great satisfaction the chronicle written by a local rhetorician who had recorded all the events that had taken place in Parma during Ranuccio's reign. However, when he reached the account of the treasure scam, he realised that the narrative had become sparse and he complained about this to the rhetorician. Essentially, Corio - if he is indeed the author - uses the anecdote as an ?exemplum? to emphasise the need for intellectual honesty, consistency and freedom from double standards in writing. This is clearly a satirical piece written for a specific occasion and likely circulated in Parma among the local academies and perhaps even at court. This edition appears to be unrecorded, and we could not find the poem anywhere else.
