Sean, pues, mis primeras palabras un tributo sincero a su memoria. Sólo quiero llamarle" Amigo". Porque si los parientes y familiares son los amigos que nos impone la sangre, los Amigos son los familiares y parientes que elegimos, sin imposiciones de ningún tipo ni orden, en uso del don más preciado que nos concede Dios después de la Grada: la libertad. Quien dice "Amigo" dice amor y sacrificio, comprensión y consejo, desinterés y fe. Todo esto he hallado en Díez Echarri a lo largo de los quince anos que día tras día he convivido con él. Por eso sé muy bien lo que he perdido con su ausencia definitiva. Y no quiero hablar de su competencia intelectual para no predisponer al lector; que la juzgue por la obra que tiene en sus manos. Si de algo pecó a lo largo de su vida fué de no ver mala intención en nada; quien como él fué bueno por naturaleza no podrá concebir en nadie aviesa intención. Al preparar esta segunda edición quiero dejar intacto cuanto él y yo escribimos. Creo que puede ser una prueba más de mi afecto. Por otra parte, el éxito que ha alcanzado la primera, agotada a los dos años, ha hecho también imposible de llevar a cabo las ampliaciones y correcciones que creo imprescindibles. Por eso sale al público una Segunda Edición mientras va muy adelantada la Tercera, tan reformada y ampliada, que bien podrá considerarse como obra nueva.
