Ex-library with a library stamp on the title-page and an embossed library stamp on approximately six leaves (no plates), and a perforated stamp on a few leafs, the text-block has browning, in some c…ases quite significant. boards slightly warped with a bit of wear to the spine ends, but this is still a very good copy of this important catalogue of this collection of ancient coins. Charles III de Croy [1560-1612] Seigneur de Croy, who played an important role on both sides of the Dutch Revolt, serving both the Protestant insurgents in 1583 and later in 1585, his allegiance returned to his Catholic faith and the Spanish Crown. He was an avid collector of both art and coins. He is perhaps most famous for his Albums, a collection of detailed, illustrated maps of all his lands and holdings. 'These cartualries were in reality real atlases and contained numerous colored maps in teh manner of a cadastre. These collections also contained some birds'-eye views of the castles and villages. The cadastral plans were reproduced on parchment, and in addition to the plans, the view of each locality was painted in gouache. In 1610 he appointed the Antwerp Jacob de Bie as keeper of his extensive collection of ancient coins. De Bie began work on an edition of the collection, which finally appeared after the Duke's death in 1615 and reprinted in the above edition in 1627.
