Il s'agit de la réimpression d'un célèbre recueil de lettres satiriques et parodiques d'Ulrich Von Hutten et de J. Crotus Rubianus dirigées contre le clergé catholique vers 1516. Le titre parodie les Epistolae clarorum virorum de Reuchlin (1514) dans lesquelles il était question de brûler tous les livres non chrétiens. C'est cet ouvrage qui est à l'origine du terme "obscurantisme" repris par les philosophes des Lumières. L'ouvrage est suivi de deux pièces satiriques en français à l'encontre de Pierre Lizet (1482-1554) dont l'Epistola magistri Benedicti Passavanti attribuée à Théodore de Bèze : ce jurisconsulte intolérant, premier président au Parlement de Paris est en effet à l'origine de la Chambre ardente contre les Protestants.
