A first edition of this work, with eight delightful plates by Victorian illustrator Halbot Knight Browne, better known by his pen name, Phiz. Collated and complete. Surtees wrote several hunting novels across his lifetime, and his best remembered for his character Jorrocks, a tasteless but good-natured cockney grocer. Binder's sticker to the front pastedown. Front hinge starting and tender, rear hinge starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound except for the first and last few pages which are tender. Frontispiece is disbound but present. This book is attractively bound in half maroon leather to spine and corners with red water marked cloth to the remaining board, the binding is generally in a very good condition, banded spine with gilt decoration within the panels, title in gilt, minor rubbing to extreme edges, slight fading to front cloth on the board, single line detail to front, rear and corners, top edge gold, closed page edges signs of normal soiling, marbled endpapers in pastel colours, , inscription neatly written on page following front endpaper 'E F Talbot Pourouly (the last name is difficult to decypher) , Christmas 1908 from JS-- (not decypherable) '. 24 Superb Engravings on Steel, hand coloured and tissue protected. The frontispiece is an engraving 'Simon Heavyside and his Hounds' the adjacent Title Page is embellished with a vignette hunting scene similarly hand coloured. The illustrations are stikingly distinctive, the colours used are still bright, fresh and clean and not affected by marks for foxing. Throughout the book other black and white engravings appear in the text, viii, 405 pages. All plates present. A brilliant glimpse of the lives and pastimes enjoyed by rich landowners, gentry and their servants in Victorian times, full of character and humour. A superb gift for those who enjoy the writings of Surtees and the art that goes with his work.…
