Beginning with the candle's wax, wick, flame, and combustion, Faraday expands the discussion to include capillary action, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, water, respiration, and the interdependence of natural processes. First published from lectures delivered at the Royal Institution, the work became a classic of Victorian popular science and remains admired for Faraday's ability to make complex scientific ideas understandable through an ordinary object. Condition: Good. Illustrated wrappers remain securely attached but show considerable age and handling wear. Covers are toned, rubbed, spotted, and soiled, particularly along the margins and rear panel, with worn and softened corners. Spine is faded and creased, with rubbing, small areas of paper loss or abrasion, and a black "X4" notation near the foot. Page edges are toned. The photographed interior pages remain clean and legible, with mild age-toning and no extensive writing or markings visible. A sound, complete reading copy with an appealing period cover design. Boards are normally scuffed at edges and corners. Ink marginalia found on front board. Headband intact; spine cracked at page 46-7. Ex-library bookplates found on front and rear paste-downs; permanent ink stamp found on title page. Front end-page and fly-leaf brittle with chipping at edges. Some pencil marginalia on title page. Normal toning throughout text-block, mostly at edges of leaves. Binding fragile. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. The Journal of the Photographic Society, later the Royal Photographic Society, was first published on 3 March 1853 and it has been published continuously ever since. The magazine's title was changed with volume 5 (1859) when it was renamed The Photographic Journal and this was recently updated to the RPS Journal. The publication is the oldest photographic periodical in the world. Sir William Crookes (1832 1919) was an English chemist and physicist who attended the Royal College of Chemistry, now part of Imperial College London, and worked on spectroscopy. He was a pioneer of vacuum tubes, inventing the Crookes tube, which was made in 1875. This was a foundational discovery that eventually changed the whole of chemistry and physics. Crookes became a junior assistant to August Wilhelm von Hofmann, doing laboratory demonstrations and helping with research and commercial analysis. In October 1851, Crookes was promoted to senior assistant, a position he held until 1854. Although Crookes revered Hofmann, he did not share his primary interest in organic chemistry. One of Crookes's students was the Reverend John Barlow, Secretary of the Royal Institution, who chose to take a course in analytical chemistry. Through Barlow, Crookes met scientists such as George Gabriel Stokes and Michael Faraday. Such friends reinforced Crookes's interest in optical physics, which was respected by Hofmann. By 1851, Crookes's interest in photography and optics caused his father to build him a laboratory in the garden at home for his research. Year 4 (Volume IV), First Edition.
