"An beiden hat die neuere Kritik Verstösse gegen die Chronologie und den wirklichen Sachverhalt nachgewiesen, dem 'bellum Catilinae' ist sogar jeder historische Wert abgesprochen worden. Allein Sallust war nun einmal Politiker, und es war ihm nicht darum zu thun, als strenger Annalist über die Ereignisse Buch zu führen, sondern nach dem Vorbild und in der Art des Thukydides ein möglichst abgerundetes, lebendiges, fesselndes Bild seines Gegenstandes zu geben, mit kräftiger Hervorhebung der treibenden Kräfte, scharfer Charakteristik der Hauptpersonen, gedrängter Behandlung der Hauptsachen. Das hat er meisterlich erreicht. [.] Die eingestreuten Reden sind Meisterstücke römischer Beredsamkeit und nicht weniger kunstvoll in die Gesamtdarstellung eingewoben als jene des Thukydides.
