First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. N/A (illustrator). 1st Edition. CRAWFURD, Raymond, M.A., M.D. Oxon., F.R.C.P., Fellow of King's College, London. Plague and Pestilence in Literature and Art. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1914. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with the Oxford University Press shield device; Clarendon Press printer's mark at foot of spine. Printer's signature: 1592. First edition, first printing - the only edition. Originally delivered as the FitzPatrick Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians in 1912, this handsome Clarendon Press volume is one of the most distinguished works in the literature on epidemic disease as reflected in art and culture. Crawfurd, a Fellow of King's College London and Oxford-trained physician, drew on wide learning in classical and modern literature, art history, numismatics, and medical history to produce a scholarly yet highly readable account of how pestilence shaped the human imagination from antiquity to the eighteenth century. The book examines plague deities of the ancient world (Apollo, Asclepius), the role of Saints Sebastian and Roch as protectors against pestilence, the development of plague iconography, the Dance of Death tradition, and the literary responses to epidemic from the Bible through Boccaccio, Defoe, and beyond. Illustrated with 14 plates of exceptional quality and iconographic interest, comprising: frontispiece (S. Sebastian by Sodoma); Plate I (classical coins and medals including Apollo with Bow and Mouse, Asclepius with Serpent, Pest-Thaler struck at Wittenberg 1528, Christ on the Cross, the Brazen Serpent); Plate II (Plague of Ashdod by N. Poussin); Plate III (Plague of David by P. Mignard); Plate IV (Gregory and the Angel); Plate V (Fresco in S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome); Plate VI (La Peste à Rome by Delaunay); Plate VII (Sebastian as Protector against Pestilence by Benozzo Gozzoli); Plate VIII (Sodoma's Sebastian Plague Banner; SS. Roch and Sigismund); Plate IX (SS. Mark, Sebastian, Roch, Cosmas and Damian by Titian); Plate X (S. Roch by Ambrogio Borgognone); Plate XI (S. Roch tended by an Angel by Niklaus Manuel); Plate XII (Madonna and Child by G. Francesco Caroto); Plate XIII (Dance of Death at Basle); Plate XIV (Madonna della Misericordia by Bonfigli). Provenance - of scholarly interest: This copy comes from the library of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, Oxford, bearing their handsome engraved bookplate (incorporating the arms of the University of Oxford) with shelf-mark RC 172 CRA 1914, together with ink stamps and accession reference 77/273. Notably, the Wellcome stamp is accompanied by a circular "Staff" stamp, indicating that this copy was part of the personal or staff library of a named member of the Unit rather than the general circulating collection - suggesting it may have been the working copy of a historian of medicine at the Unit. A manuscript signature to the front free endpaper reads what appears to be "M. Abromshaw" (or similar) - possibly a staff member's ownership signature. A small manuscript annotation "H.P." appears above the author's name on the title page, suggesting an earlier ownership mark. Subsequently withdrawn and deaccessioned from the Unit, with "WITHDRAWN" stamp applied.
