MORE HUMAN THAN DIVINE is an uncommon book in which Spratling examines pre-Columbian Mexican ceramics, the images and styles of which greatly influenced Spratling's silver designs. Although it is unmentioned in the book, many of the photographed pieces were part of Spratling's personal collection which he donated to UNAM, an act which was not entirely charitable since various Mexican authorities were more than upset at Spratling's persistent dabbling in illegal artifact trading.
