Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Color illustrated dustjacket, blue boards with title printed on spine. (5) 6-231 pp. featuring many color illustrations. There is astonishingly little literature in English on painting in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Published in association with the Cantor Center for Visual Arts, this exhibition catalogue… explores a little known aspect of the history of art that is increasingly appreciated for its energy and originality. Although the initial impetus for paintings in South America was provided by artists who came from Europe, they were soon outnumbered by natives who become proficient in decorating churches and public buildings. The 56 paintings--never previously published--in the Thoma Collection offer an accurate and compelling survey of the diverse schools of painting that developed in the vast regions of the Viceroyalty which yielded the present day countries of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - While the socio-economic and historical aspects of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) have been extensively documented and researched, the role of the VOC in visual culture and the arts has been relatively neglected. This authoritative volume addresses various aspects of cultural exchange b…etween the Low Countries and Asia. Increased prosperity and the flood of imported goods from Asia had a huge influence on seventeenth-century Holland. To cite some examples: when the VOC spread its merchandise throughout the various regions of Asia, Chinese decorative motives became popular in Indonesia. After the lifting of the seventeenth-century ban on the import of Christian books to Japan, a wave of interest in Dutch culture hit the country, giving rise to Hollandmania, imitation of anything Dutch. Mediating Netherlandish Art and Material Culture in Asia offers new insights into the world routes travelled by seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture, as well as the rise of Asian influence in the imagery of the Dutch Golden Age.
