About the book >.>.> Whigs on the Green: Stephens Green Club, 1840-1990 Book by Cornelius F. Smith, Bernard ShareThis record celebrates the Stephen?s Green Club in Dublin on its 150th anniversary, tracing the institution?s history from its establishment in 1840. The Club grew out of the earlier Union Club, associated with Daniel O?Connell, the political reformer known in Ireland as ?The Liberator? for his work for Catholic Emancipation and the repeal of the Act of Union with Great Britain. The Club?s liberal character is reflected in its membership, the ?Whigs on the Green?, drawn from business and the professions and representing a diversity of religious persuasions. Since its founding, the Club has occupied the same premises on St Stephen?s Green, one of Dublin?s great squares. The house is believed to date from the early eighteenth century and is described as significant to the city?s architectural history. Largely written by Club members with specialist knowledge, the record considers the institution?s geographical and social place in Dublin life and offers a perspective on the city?s diverse history.
