Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is the 1980 First Edition of "On Mencken", which consists of essays by eight men who worked with or knew the great newspaper columnist, and professional curmudgeon, H. L. Mencken in one way or another. The essayists are William Manchester, Malcolm Moos, Huntington Cairns, William Nolte, Alistair Cooke, Carl Bode, Charles A. Fecher, Alfred A. Knopf. Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book was edited by John Dorsey, who also wrote the Introduction. From the dust-jacket flap : "In essays celebrating the incomparable H. L. Mencken, on the centenary of his birth, eight distinguished writers and editors consider various aspects of the man and his work - telling of his life, his writings, his prejudices, his passions, and his profound influence on American letters in the first half of the Twentieth Century. --- The result is a book that offers much pleasure and new insights to Mencken's admirers, and that will serve, for anyone not familiar with him, as a fine introduction to one of the most colorful and memorable figures in modern Twentieth Century American letters." Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine/As New condition. "A firsthand account of how this extraordinary cult movie was made by the Oscar-winning Coen brothers. [] THE BIG LEBOWSKI is the Coen brothers' razor-sharp comedy thriller of mistaken identity, gangsters, bowling, kidnapping, and money gone astray. Jeff Bridges's portrayal of the Dude has become iconic, as have many of its lines. The movie also has amazing performances by John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliot, and Ben Gazzara. [] Not given to talking publicly about their work, the Coens gave unprecedented access to Tricia Cooke and William Preston Robertson to interview the cast and crew during the film's production. In a prose style that complements the Coens' filmic one, the book discusses the Coens' oeuvre, the themes of their work, and their unique brand of humor. It closely examines several scenes of THE BIG LEBOWSKI to explore how an idea transitions to reality and shows the process by which the Coens craft their artistic vision. A new afterword examines its embrace by popular culture, including the many Lebowski Fests, as well as its being the subject of quasi-serious academic discourse." [publisher copy] (See my listing RUB870 for THE YEAR'S WORK IN LEBOWSKI STUDIES, edited by Edward P. Comentale & Aaron Jaffe.) Pristine paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine. Quite presentable.

John Nevil Maskelyne (22 December 1839 - 18 May 1917) was an English stage magician and inventor of the pay toilet, along with many other Victorian-era devices. Working with magicians George Alfred Cooke and David Devant, many of his illusions are still performed today. [Davenport's and Maskelynes at L. Davenport & Co.,] Ira Erastus Davenport (September 17, 1839 - July 8, 1911) and William Henry Davenport (February 1, 1841 - July 1, 1877), known as the Davenport Brothers, were American magicians in the late 19th century, sons of a Buffalo, New York policeman. The brothers presented illusions that they and others claimed to be supernatural. (VM6).
