Opera che prende spunto dalla bolla papale medievale pubblicata da Papa Pio V il giorno del Giovedì Santo del 1568 e intitolata In coena Domini. A seguito della pubblicazione della bolla, che comminava le censure ecclesiastiche più severe a coloro che violavano l'ortodossia e la giurisdizione della Chiesa, gli Stati europei reagirono vivacemente tentando di evitare la ripresa di una teocrazia di stampo medievale. Contin si ispira apertamente al pensiero di Paolo Sarpi e di Giustino Febronio, ed è convinto che solo la diffusione della cultura, la discussione, istruzione e volontà dei governanti di agire secondo l'utile del Paese siano l'unico strumento per togliere le radici della pericolosa riforma papale della In coena Domini.Celebre opera del chierico teatino e illuminista veneziano Tommaso Antonio Contin. Attento lettore degli illuministi italiani e francesi e uno dei massimi esponenti della corrente giurisdizionalista, costituiva, con Gasparo Gozzi, Gianfrancesco Scotton ed Alberto Fortis, un forte gruppo di potere in ambito intellettuale veneziano.
