Illustrated with twenty-seven coloured plates and a monochrome portrait frontispiece. Collated, complete. Volume II of Buffon"s celebrated natural history, one of the most ambitious and influential attempts to survey the natural world produced during the Enlightenment. This expanded English edition contains sections devoted to birds, fishes, reptiles, insects, and exotic plants, incorporating later discoveries by prominent naturalists. Translated from the French by William Smellie. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, worn. Front board detached, but present.Rubbing to boards with the odd minor scratch. Chipping to calf. Small repair to calf of rear board. Creasing to spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to calf. Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean if typically age toned with the odd light spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge.
