A vintage 1994 neatly scripted gift inscription by Mildred Gertrude… Hall to "Dearest Barbara Jean, Roger, and Schubert states, in part: "This is a picture book on "Old Manchester" that I hope you both enjoy it as I do. Something you can turn to many times. Manchester has been my home since I was born in 1909. Many changes , no car then only horse and buggy - No planes, but my grandmother was the first woman in Manchester to take a plane ride in 1924. Christmas Greetings & Love always, Mother (Mildred Gertrude Lepp) Hall." "For Reference Not to be taken from this room" sticker neatly affixed to upper edge of inner front cover and two library stamps. Uncirculated "For Reference: Not to be taken from this room" Geneology Department copy. "Time Traveler: We' like to welcome you to "Old Manchester.A Picture Book". You are about to become a time traveler on a journey back in time to a constant space that is ever changing but remains somewhere in Manchester, Connecticut. Where there is now only sand or vestigial stone, there used to be a factory. Where the river now runs flat and placid, there used to be a dam, a race of rapid waters and a water wheel. Where there is now a sleek and expensive modern car parked at the curb there used to be a lively horse and a white-aproned jovial Irish delveryman called "Johnny the Baker". Where there is now a muffler shop, there used to be a "shoeing parlor" for horses. Where there used to be a quiet wooded path, there now runs the road called Broad Street. As a time traveler, you will journey back in time to the 1800's and early 1900's. The pictures portray specific areas of town, over a wide period of time, not always in any particular order. On one page you may find yourself in front of a country store in 1855, then turn the page to find yourself a block away looking at scenes from 1878. Remember time traveler, whether it's a blink of the eye or a snap of the fingers, you must open your mind as you enter the new (very old) world of old Manchestr, Conn." - from the Preliminary Page entitled Time Traveler. Thibeau, Anthony J. (photographic reporductions) (illustrator).

Wraps. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: not applicable. Presumed First Edition. ii, 57, [1] p. Illustrated. Endnotes. Mr. D. Ray Smith is a noted local historian who worked at Y-12 for decades. The Y-12 National Security Complex is a United States Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration facility… located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It was built as part of the Manhattan Project for the purpose of enriching uranium for the first atomic bombs. In the years after World War II, it has been operated as a manufacturing facility for nuclear weapons components and related defense purposes. Y-12 is managed and operated under contract by Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS), which is composed of member companies Bechtel National, Inc., Lockheed Martin Services, Inc., ATK Launch Systems, Inc., and SOC LLC, with Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. as a teaming subcontractor. CNS also operates Pantex Plant in Texas. Y-12 is the World War II code name for the electromagnetic isotope separation plant producing enriched uranium at the Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as part of the Manhattan Project. Construction began in February 1943 under the management of Stone and Webster. The Y-12 facility began operating in November 1943, separating uranium-235 from natural uranium, which is 99.3% uranium-238, by using calutrons to perform electromagnetic isotope separation. Y-12 separated the uranium-235 for Little Boy, the nuclear weapon that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. K-25, another facility in Oak Ridge, produced enriched uranium using gaseous diffusion. K-25 did not begin operating until March 1945 and fed slightly enriched uranium to Y-12's Beta Calutrons as the push to obtain enough uranium 235 for Little Boy came in the early summer of 1945. The S-50 Thermal Diffusion Plant at the K-25 site also provided feed material for Y-12's Beta Calutrons. Tennessee Eastman was hired by the Army Corps of Engineers to manage Y-12 during the Manhattan Project. The company transferred scientists from Kingsport, Tennessee to Y-12 and operated the plant from 1943 to May 1947.[5] The Y-12 electromagnetic plant units were initially operated by scientists from Berkeley to remove bugs and achieve a reasonable operating rate. They were then turned over to trained Tennessee Eastman operators who had only a high school education. Nichols compared unit production data, and pointed out to physicist Ernest Lawrence that the young "hillbilly" girl operators were outproducing his PhDs. They agreed to a production race and Lawrence lost, a morale boost for the Tennessee Eastman workers and supervisors. The girls were "trained like soldiers not to reason why", while "the scientists could not refrain from time-consuming investigation of the cause of even minor fluctuations of the dials".

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Reprint of 1952 first edition. ix, [1], 473, [5] pages. Profusely illustrated. Maps. Appendices. List of Abbreviations. Index. CMH Pub 12-1. Signature of Carlye P. Woelfer on fep. This is believed to be the noted author of Articulation of Occupational Programs: From the High School to Community Colleg…e. Minor corner rippling at bottom of book at the back. During World War II the photographers of the United States armed forces created on film a pictorial record of immeasurable value. Thousands of pictures are preserved in the photographic libraries of the armed services but are little seen by the public. In the narrative volumes of UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II, it is possible to include only a limited number of pictures. Therefore, a subseries of pictorial volumes, of which this is the last, has been planned to supplement the other volumes of the series. The photographs have been especially selected to show important terrain features, types of equipment and weapons, living and weather conditions, military operations, and matters of human interest. These volumes will preserve and make accessible for future reference some of the best pictures of World War II. An appreciation not only of the terrain upon which actions were fought, but also of its influence on the capabilities and limitations of weapons in the hands of both our troops and those of the enemy, can be gained through a careful study of the pictures herein presented. These factors are essential to a clear understanding of military history. The book deals with the Pacific Theater of Operations and is divided into six sections: (1) The Allied Defensive; (2) The Strategic Defensive and Tactical Offensive; (3) The Offensive1944; (4) The Final Phase; (5) The ChinaBurmaIndia Theater; and (6) The Collapse of Japan and the End of the War in the Pacific.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xxiii, [1], 422, [2] pages. Frontis illustration. Illustrations. Foreword by Jules Tygiel. Appendix: Negro League Statistics. Index. DJ has wear and soiling, Some DJ edges worn/torn away. Among the collaborative authors were: Ad…rian Burgos, Leslie Heaphy, Neil Lanctot, Michael Lomax, James Overmyer, Robert Peterson, Rob Rock, and Lyle Wilson. The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams predominantly made up of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In 1885 the Cuban Giants formed the first black professional baseball team. The Negro American League of 1951 is considered the last season and the last professional club, the Indianapolis Clowns, operated as a humorous sideshow from the mid-1960s to the 1980s. This comprehensive, lively history combines vivid narrative, visual impact, and a unique statistical component, to recreate the excitement and passion of the Negro Leagues. Packed with stories, biographical essays, and archival photographs, it is an important contribution to sports history and a tribute to the players and teams who wrote a unique chapter in the annals of baseball and American culture. "Shades of Glory" traces the history of black baseball from the 19th century to the first great teams, such as the Cuban Giants, and on to the era of barnstorming teams. Rube Foster started the first Negro League in 1920, with such teams as the Chicago American Giants and the Kansas City Monarchs. Pittsburgh produced two of the greatest teams of all time, the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. "Shades of Glory" chronicles a bygone era of black baseball and the stars who were shadowed by racial prejudice, but now shine forth in all their sparkling brilliance.
