Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. David Eccles (illustrator). 1st Edition, Limited Edition. First edition in this form, first printing. Two-volume set. The facsimile volume of The Holkham Bible is bound in half navy morocco with four raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine, gilt decorative borders to the boards, and titles and illustrations to the upper board stamped in red, blue, and gilt. All edges are gilt. The accompanying commentary volume is bound in blue paper-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, gilt rules to the boards, and a printed title label on the upper board. Both volumes are housed together in a patterned cloth-covered Solander box with a morocco spine label lettered in red and gilt. Issued as a colour facsimile of the richly illuminated Holkham Bible. The set is in very good plus condition: the bindings are firm and square, the contents are clean and bright throughout, and there are no inscriptions or stamps. There is a minor scrape to the top edge of the upper board. Issued in a limited edition of 1,750 numbered copies, of which this example is lettered 'J' as part of 25 additional lettered copies 'not for sale'. The facsimile is accompanied by a scholarly commentary by Michelle P. Brown, Professor Emerita of Medieval Manuscript Studies at University College London and former Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. Brown has also contributed commentaries to facsimile editions of the Luttrell Psalter and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Created in England in the early 14th century, the Holkham Bible is notable for depicting biblical narratives within contemporary local settings, making it an invaluable visual record of medieval English life. The original manuscript was acquired by the British Library from the library of Holkham Hall in 1952.

The Luttrell Psalter is one of the British Library's greatest treasures. It is an illuminated manuscript that was commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276-1345), a wealthy landowner who lived at Irnham, Lincolnshire. Planned and made over a number of years between 1330 and 1345, it was created by several artists who probably all joined the Luttrell household for the duration of their work. As a result of their close connection with the patron's family and everyone else alongside whom they lived, it is one of the most personalised manuscripts, providing a unique glimpse of medieval life. Famous for its long series of scenes of life in rural England, with incredibly detailed depictions people at work and play, other pages often reveal an illuminator with a lively imagination and marvellous sense of colour. Very few people before now have had the opportunity to turn and admire these 624 wonderful pages. This full-sized facsimile edition gives everyone the chance to do so. As a helpful aid to the reader, the volume also contains a scholarly commentary by Michelle Brown which tells the story of the manuscript in great detail and includes a folio-by-folio description. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A BRITISH LIBRARY EDITION.
