This finely illustrated work is one of the great voyage collections and ranks alongside those of Hakluyt and Purchas. It includes accounts of all the voyages on which the Duyfken, captained by William Jansz, sailed, of great importance as it was the Duyfken which would make the first sighting of the Australian coast. This is the preferred edition of the work (two editions, far less complete, had previously appeared), with a preface by Commelin, a summary of pre-1631 Dutch voyages, and is superbly illustrated with maps, charts, views of the early settlements, indigenous people, animals, and natural history subjects. It is one of the most valuable collections of voyages ever made in any language. All these journals are either reprinted with slight variations from the original editions or from autograph manuscripts placed at the disposal of the editor, or from personal narratives. The compiler is the learned Isaac Commelin (1598-1676), bookbinder and well-known citizen of Amsterdam. It was originally based on Theodore de Bry's map of Southeast Asia, maintaining the same location and shape of the islands and land forms and even copying the compass rose and the two sea monsters at bottom. Commelin updated the map by extending it further east to show more of New Guinea, as well as adding an inset of the island of Buton and the Buton Strait in the Celebes.
