Condition: New. SB xv+304pp. portraits, illustrations, 2002 N&MP Reprint of 1904 Original EditionPublished Price £14.99 The 9th Lancers were stationed in Muttra, India, in September 1899 when they were warned for service in S Africa where war with the Boers was imminent. The Regiment sailed from Bombay on 24/25 September in three ships, one of which encountered a fierce storm between Durban and Cape Town resulting in 83 horses and nine mules being killed or washed overboard. This storm is vividly described, the carnage among the animals on deck was appalling as they were flung about among the wreckage of the wooden stables. The contents are set out in diary form with dates in the margin against the narrative which covers all matters affecting the Regiment - actions, casualties, reinforcements, extracts from Army, divisional etc orders and other correspondence, strength states, awards, all are duly noted. The first entry is for 8 Sep 1899 when the Regiment was ordered to mobilize and prepare for active service and the final entry is for 9 April 1902 when the Regiment arrived back in India after some two and a half years on active service. It saw plenty of action - at Kimberley, in the Transvaal and Orange Free State and River Colony; clasps to the Queenâs South Africa Medal gained by the Regiment as a whole were: Belmont, Modder River, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Witterbergen. Casualty details are given at the end of the book, 225 in all of whom 45 died in action and 26 of disease or from accident. There is also a complete list of officers who served with the Regiment during the campaign, a list Awards and Mentions in Despatches, and finally a record of distances covered - a total of 8,530 miles.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Howard Colvin (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. 265, [7] pages. Illustrations. Inscribed by the author on fep. Author's name and address stamped on fep. DJ has some wear, soiling, tears and chips. Jack Gordon, as a 19 year old, enlisted in the Canadian armed forces in 1940. After training in Canada as a navigator-bombardier, he served in Wellington night torpedo bombers in RAF 203 Squadron. He was transferred to the United States Air Force in India in March 1944 and was assigned to the 27th Troop Carrier squadron at Sylhet,Assam. At the completion of his missions in Burma and China, he was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He arrived home in April 1945. Indelibly burned into the memories of the men who were there, Jack Gordon's gripping story of the fliers of the China-Burma-India Theater vividly recaptures the experience of the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron. Here is preserved how it was to fly through monsoon and Japanese action to drop supplies to Wingate's Chindits in the Burmese jungle, to support the Chinese Nantionalists opening the Burma Road in mountainous Yunnan Province, to cross the treacherous, uncharted skies of the Hump in their C-47's. For everyone--children, grandchildren, the young and the old--this is a new kind of history of WWII. With authentic photos, this is a crystal clear picture of part of the American experience in Southeast Asia. Wings from Burma to the Himalayas is a living portrayal of the emotions and times of a generation.
