Buona parte dei rimedi contro le malattie era, in passato, ricavata da piante spontanee o coltivate nell'orto. L'erboristeria contadina e popolare conserva ancora la memoria di infusi, decotti, impiastri usati per secoli e che gli stessi farmacisti di un tempo avevano in gran parte recuperati e migliorati. L'uso elementare delle "erbe medicamentose", con precise indicazioni sui sintomi delle malattie da combattere, faceva parte delle comuni conoscenze degli anziani e la prima cura avveniva in famiglia. L'esperienza collettiva si arricchiva spesso a livello individuale di una conoscenza di erbe "speciali" e la fiducia in questo o in quel trattamento si misurava dal rispetto che un "botanico" sapeva suscitare nella gente. Esistevano, appunto, "esperti" di fama, chiamati "botanici", ai quali si ricorreva in caso di gravità o di insistenza del male, indicati dalla pubblica opinione come autentici "guaritori", contrapponendo la loro "arte" sicura e consolidata nel tempo, alla scienza dei dottori: difficilmente il malato riusciva infatti a stabilire un rapporto umano con il medico, mentre il "botanico", el zarlatan appartenevano alla "categoria dei poveri" e ne conoscevano i mali.
