I belie…ve this inscription is in a secretarial hand, and not written by John Collins Warren. However, it is still a presentation copy. "As director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Warren allowed William Thomas Green Morton to perform his celebrated demonstration on the use of ether in surgery. Warren performed the operation (a surgical excision) while Morton served as anesthetist. Warren's support of the new development was in large part responsible for its subsequent worldwide acceptance. In this fascinating booklet, Warren gives a firsthand description of the early use of ether in surgery, including a detailed account of the famous operation mentioned above" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1345). Garrison-Morton (online) 11727: "Warren performed the first surgical operation under anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846. He was for several years physician to the city institutions, and consulting physician of the Massachusetts General Hospital. His tastes, when a young man, led him to the study of Comparative Anatomy, in which his attainments were remarkable. Many of the preparations used by the senior Dr. Warren in his lectures were the work of his hands, and we have been informed that some of the best specimens in the Cabinet of the Boston Society of Natural History were prepared by him. His skill as a surgeon and a physician was well known, and his benevolence title page those in humble circumstances was proverbial" (American Journal of Numismatics, and Bulletin of the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society, Vol. 10, No. 2 October 1875, pp. 45-46).
