Om dit te bereik, moet die geskiedskrywer hom in die ver lede-werklikheid inleef, moet hy probeer beleef wat hy be skryf. Maar syne is 'n terugwaartse beskouing: hy is nooit medespeler nie, selfs nie ooggetuie nie; sy kennis van die verlede is 'n onregstreekse, afgeleide, nooit 'n onmiddellike waarneming nie. Dit ontbreek hom aan die immanensie van tydgenootskap, aan betrokkenheid met, noodwendig, die ge paardgaande sydigheid. Hy self is blote vertolker, bemidde laar tussen verlede en toekoms. Om die verlede te peil en te beleef, is hy in hoofsaak aange wese op die toeganklikheid van amptelike, skynbaar be troubare, bronnemateriaal. Hy is gelukkig as dit aangevul, bevestig of weerlê kan word deur die getuienis van tyd genote, medespelers of meelopers. Hoe eensydig, selfs apologeties ook al, is hulle getuienis van belang. En die tydgenoot kan nie onbetrokke wees nie. Hy was ook deelgenoot en par tygenoot, is aanklaer sowel as pleitbesorger. Flip Coetzer was tyd- en deelgenoot van die gebeure in die afgelope vyf dekades van die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis. Uit hoofde van sy, tot geheimhouding verbonde, betrokken heid het hy dié veelbewoëjare persoonlik beleef. Hy het sy aan sy met gesagvoerders en beleidmakers gestaan en moes dikwels uitvoering aan hulle besluite gee. Al het hy nie altyd akkoord gegaan nie. Vandag kan hy openbaar maak en aan toon hoe huidige navorsing destydse sieninge en standpunte staaf. Baie herinneringe het hom bygebly: aan 'n skemering in die Kompolgebou, 'n nagvlug van Bonn af, 'n dagvlug na Kaapstad, gesprekke en ontmoetinge, indrukke en gewaar wordinge. Miskien moes meer van dié momente weergegee gewees het. Maar die oogmerk was anders en wyer as die mededeling van persoonlike herinneringe. Namate dít wat waargeneem en ervaar is, deur navorsing versterk en bevestig is, het die drang ontstaan om bewys te lewer van die belang rike, dikwels toonaangewende rol van die internasionale Kommunisme uit die Kremlin in die aard en doelstelling van die sogenaamde vryheidstryd in Suid-Afrika. En van die staats-en strafregtelike, soms "drakoniese" teenmaatreëls. En van die persoonlikhede wat teenoor mekaar gestaan het. En hy huiwer nie om 'n oordeel uit te spreek nie. Boekstawing van 'n deurleefde verlede kan met vrug, in dien met omsigtige begrip, gebruik word. Juis die betrokken heid van waarneming en deelname stel die historikus in staat om die geestesgesteldheid van 'n vergange tyd te peil, waar sonder inlewing moeilik is. Hierdie persoonlike belydenis is 'n nuttige kanttekening by gebeure waaroor nog vir baie dekades geskryf, gegis en be spiegel sal word. Van hierdie woord oor die verlede sal die toekoms kennis neem. Woord wat daad geword het. Vorster (die destydse voorsitter), dr. A. Hertzog en mnr. J.J.H. Victor (die huidige voorsitter) genader om 'n wetenskaplike politieke biografie oor die lewe en werk van die gevierde staatsman, genl. J.B.M. Hertzog, saam te stel 'n projek wat ook deur die Afrikaanse Persfonds geborg sou word. Vir INEG, tans die tuiste van die Afrikaanse Persfonds se J.B.M.
