Softbound. Condition: VG, Like New. Color illustrated wraps. 256 pp., About 250 color and 50 b&w illus. Issued in conjunction with 2006-2007 exhibitions held in California and Belgium, focusing on the work of Rene Magritte (1898-1967). His seminal painting "The Treachery of Images (This Is Not a Pipe)" is a Surrealist and Modern…ist masterpiece that has become an instantly recognizable pop culture icon. It's also an excellent image with which to begin a serious discussion about the meaning(s) of representation. While many books and exhibitions have undertaken to survey the work of Magritte, and while many have acknowledged his profound impact upon other artists of his generation, none has yet studied the precise connections between Magritte's work and today's top contemporary artists. In The Treachery of Images, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art brings together more than 50 of the most important Magrittes with an equal number of very significant works by contemporary artists, both cool and edgy, including Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, Vija Celmins, Joseph Kosuth, Sherrie Levine, Richard Artschwager, Jeff Koons, Martin Kippenberger, Jim Shaw, Raymond Pettibon, Robert Gober and Marcel Broodthaers. Among the distinguished contributors are the internationally renowned art writer Thierry de Duve, co-curator Michel Draguet (director of the Musees Royaux de Bruxelles), critic Pepe Karmel and art historian Dickran Tashjian. Chapters and interviews are devoted to Ruscha, Celmins, Gober and Artschwager, among others.

Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, November 2, 2011 to January 16, 2012, and at the Muse e Picasso in Antibes, France, from February 16 through May 20, 201…2. BRAND NEW. A fine copy. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. OVERSIZE! Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "An unlikely episode in the history of European Modernism is the alliance between the avant-garde and the antique forged by artists of impeccable radical credentials. This book focuses on the reinventions and transformations of antiquity in the work of four culturally and politically diverse artists between 1905 and 1935. In distinctly different ways, classicizing creations such as de Chirico's enigmatic piazzas, Picasso's post-Cubist women, Leger's mechanized nudes, and Picabia's Transparencies reflect what the eyes and minds of these artists found so arresting in the arts of antiquity and how they made those arts modern. Classicism in the modern age has often been condemned as a conservative regression of the avant-garde in light of the totalitarian regimes that formed in Europe during this period. Yet far from being a reactionary language, the "classical" provided a range of elements that were surprisingly in tune with the "modern." Modern Antiquity draws unprecedented attention not only to the aesthetic impact ancient art had on twentieth-century artists but also to the ways in which these artists shaped our contemporary experience of antiquity. The result is a new and more nuanced appreciation of the complex role the classical past has played in western modernity." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.
