Edward Stratemeyer was both an author and a publisher of children's series books (Ralph of the Railroad, Radio Boys, Darewell Chums, etc.); he also employed several different authors to write books for his publishing ventures. This Railroad series eventually included 10 different titles that were published between 1906 and 1928. This copy, while it was the first in the series, is a later Grosset & Dunlap printing of the book which was first published in 1906 by The Merschon Co. and written by Weldon J. Cobb at Stratemeyer's direction. Merschon only published the first two books in the series; the rest were published by G&D. There is no separate date given to this G&D printing, however, the ads in the rear only include the first 8 titles of the railroad series, so this copy may have been published about 1924. It is bound in the original brown cloth publisher's covers with black cover decoration depicting railroad locomotive and black cover and spine lettering. There is some light spotting to the front cover, else this is a clean, tight and unmarked book. If it was originally published with a dust jacket, the jacket is no longer present. This is a clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates.; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 278 pages.

This edition bears a copyright date of 1901, presumably for the year in which the story first appeared in Golden Hours (March 30-May 18, 1901) as "To Mars With Tesla, or, the Mystery of Hidden Worlds." A revised and / or abridged dime novel version was issued by Street & Smith in their Bound-to-Win Library (30 November 1905, number 145) as Adventures in Other Worlds. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 441. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 169. See Locke, Voyages in Space 233. Reginald 03114. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978).
