First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition/first printing hardcover with dustcover: book very good plus, dustcover very good. Light blue cloth-covered boards, 8 1/4 x 6 inches, 297 pp., b/w photo illustrations. Plate of W. Clement Stone with a Christmas message tipped onto the front free endpaper. ("William Clement Stone (1902 2002) was a businessman, philanthropist and New Thought self-help book author. Stone was a living example of the proverbial rags-to-riches protagonist in the Horatio Alger's stories he loved. In 1951, Stone founded the interfaith group 'The Washington Pilgrimage', which later became the 'Religious Heritage of America'. It successfully advocated the Eisenhower administration to add the 'under God' to the Pledge of Allegiance. Stone contributed up to $10 million to President Richard Nixon's election campaigns in 1968 and 1972; they were cited in Congressional debates after the Watergate scandal to institute campaign spending limits. According to Tim Weiner, in One Man Against the World: The Tragedy of Richard Nixon, in 1972 President Nixon's lawyer, Herbert Kalmbach, helped raise money for Nixon's presidential campaign by selling ambassadorships to large donors, including 'W. Clement Stone, [who] pledged $3 million.'") (K046).

Quoting the Discogs website: "The orchestra was originally credited only as 'Symphony Orchestra' and was assumed to be the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. An updated back cover on subsequent reissues clarified that the orchestra was the Symphony Of The Air. First classical recording to go platinum and eventually triple platinum. Van Cliburn received a Grammy award for this recording." The First Grammy awards were made in May 1959. This Van Cliburn recording was in the first group of Grammys, in the category Best Classical Performance - Instrumentalist (With Concerto Scale Accompaniment). The second Grammy awards were made in November 1959 and Van Cliburn won a second Grammy then for a different recording (Rachmaninoff Concerto no. 3). Van Cliburn, whose full name was Harvey Lavan Cliburn Jr., was 23 years old in April 1958 when he won the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in the Soviet Union (he turned 24 in July 1958). In the final round of the competition he played this Tchaikovsky piano concerto and Rachmaninoff's third piano concerto. His Grammy in May 1958 was for this Tchaikovsky recording and his Grammy in November 1958 was for his Rachmaninoff recording. This occurred in the middle of the "Cold War" between the US and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Sputnik launch having occurred the previous year (1957). Cliburn's triumph in the Soviet Union led to a ticket tape parade in New York City, a visit with President Eisenhower in the White House, an appearance on the cover of Time magazine, an appearance on Steve Allen's television show, a concert at Carnegie Hall, and this RCA Victor recording.
