Engine Co. #51" Written On Front Endpaper (Perhaps The City Partially Subsidized The Book By Purchasing Copies For Its Various Offices). The First Step In Justifying Power Is To Give A Name To Each Critical Stage Of Its Historical Development, Numbing The Observer Before Seducing Them. It's So Easy It's Almost Ridiculous. One Can Count The Dozens Of Military Excursions, But The Covert Exercise Of Influence On Western Hemisphere Politics Is So Pervasive As To Be An Essential Component Of The Political Structure Of Every One Of Its Countries Far Beyond The Formal And Public Diplomatic Activity With Which The Doctrine Is Usually Discussed.

Dust jacket has some offsetting, a few chips and wear at the corners, and a few small marks and stains. A Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. This is an autobiographical, pictorial account by William McIlvaine, Jr. (1813-1867), an American artist and a soldier of the United States Army. Foreword by Robert G. Cleland. Back colophon: "400 copies printed at the Grabhorn Press, November 1951." Much of McIlvaine's account is pictorial in nature, that is, the sixteen lithographic plates he made depicting some of the scenes in California and Mexico he saw during his journey to and from California from 1849-c. the early 1850s. McIlvaine's plates are accompanied by narrative captions by him which briefly describe his travels and the subjects depicted in the plates. The titles of his plates are as follows: "Mexican and California Scenery" (title plate), "View of San Francisco," "Sacramento City," "Sutter's Fort," "Sutter's Mill," "Stockton," "Prairie Scene," "Wood's Creek," "Kanaka Creek," "Canon on the Towalumne," "Acapulco," "Ruins of a Convent," "Chapultepec," "Belen Gate," "City of Mexico," and "San Juan D'Ulloa." William McIlvaine, Jr. graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 with a Bachelor's degree. In 1835, he earned his Master's degree. In 1849, he journeyed westward to take part in the California Gold Rush. McIlvaine spent some time at the mines of the Tuolumne, Stanislaus, and Merced Rivers but appeared to spend more time sketching artworks of his surroundings than actual mining. San Francisco was also one of his destinations. In his journey to and from California, McIlvaine stopped in Mexico and visited places such as Acapulco, Mexico City, and Vera Cruz. From 1861-1863, McIlvaine served as a member of the 5th New York Regiment of the U.S. Volunteers. He passed away in Brooklyn, New York in 1867.
