Quarter bound in light green illustrated cover and dark green spine, this 1930 first edition is in very good conditio---bright and tight with no markings. The cover is quite torn and held together by the mylar protection, but retains the original price, $1.00, and the front and back flaps. Sixty-four woodcuts illustrate the clever rhymes, some of which were first published in the New Yorker. Touted as a "perfect gift book of the season"--1930, that is. The cover has a bit of age staining where the loss of dust jacket exposed it, and the corners show some wear.

Condition: Fair. 1930. First Edition. 146 pages. No dust jacket. Paper covered boards with cloth to spine. Rough-cut pages. Black and white illustrations throughout. Light thumb marking, foxing and moderate tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Light cracking to gutters and hinges but binding remains firm. Boards have moderate corner bumping and edge-wear with visible staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

They also give a detailed account of the siege of Van in 1915, when Armenians resisted the Ottoman authorities' attempts to exterminate them. Ussher and his American hospital lay inside Armenian lines, which were pounded by Ottoman artillery for several weeks. The siege came to an end when the Russians occupied the city. Ussher's memoirs of this period are complemented by Grace Knapp's The Tragedy of Bitlis, and Rafael de Nogales's Four Years Beneath the Crescent.
