Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a meticulous account of the visionary Earl of Selkirk's endeavor to establish a thriving agricultural settlement on the banks of the Red River in Rupert's Land, now Manitoba, Canada. The author draws on firsthand accounts, government documents, and the Earl's own writings to narrate the challenges and triumphs of the Red River Colony from its inception to its ultimate fruition. The book explores themes of immigration, cultural exchange, and the interplay between European colonizers and Indigenous communities. With vivid descriptions and meticulous research, the author sheds light on the complexities of the Red River experience, offering valuable insights into the complexities of early 19th-century colonial ventures in North America. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book features recollections from the author's 70 years living in Galena, Illinois. The author migrated with their Swiss-French family from what was then British America. The author settled in Galena in 1826 and contributes their first-hand account of the region's swift transformation from remote Native American territory to a booming hub for mining and farming during the 1820s and 1830s. Their chronicle includes insightful biographical sketches of prominent citizens, local politicians, lawyers, businessmen, religious figures, and others who contributed to the social and cultural milieu of Galena and the broader lead mine region during this period. Through the author's eyes, readers gain a unique insider's perspective into the daily lives of the area's inhabitants and the gradual development of towns, cities, religious institutions, and industries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. 8vo. Original green blind-embossed cloth, gilt. 304pp. Frontispiece, decorative endpapers. Errata slip tipped in. Very good. Mild bit of faint edgewear; single missing leaf (pp. 15-16) provided with expert modern facsimile on period paper. Tight and handsome first edition of this quite scarce memoir by one of Galena, Illinois' famed nine generals (U.S. Grant among them), which William E. Parrish describes: "Although the great bulk of these memoirs recounts Chetlain's experiences as a soldier, the book also contains many insights of wartime Galena, Ill." Chetlain (1824-1914) was supposedly the first Illinoisan to volunteer in the Civil War, and formed a regiment with his friend Grant; he participated in a number of major battles, and rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general; after the war he entered banking in Chicago, serving as director of the Chicago Stock Exchange. Discreet ex-library, the only markings being a small blind-embossing on the title page and, on the front pastedown, the tasteful bookplate of Chetlain's hometown library: Galena, Illinois. Even better, this copy was given the library in 1961 by the Hughlett family. Samuel Hughlett (1808-64) was an early Galena settler who owned smelting furnaces on a branch of the Galena River (now named the Hughlett Branch); he inherited many slaves from his father's Kentucky plantation, but brought them to Galena and manumitted them. Hughlett is mentioned a number of times in this volume. A sharp copy of this scarce title with a choice local connection. FLAKE 1264. NEVINS II, 145.

First edition of Major General Chetlain's Civil War memoir. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers, frontispiece portrait. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Eugene F. Estey Esg. with the best wishes of the author." In near fine condition. Uncommon in this condition and signed. Union Army general Augustus Louis Chetlain was the first man in Illinois to volunteer at the outbreak of the American Civil War. On April 16, he was part of a meeting held in Galena to raise a volunteer company and, with Ulysses S. Grant, was prominent in its creation. When Grant declined the post, he suggested for Chetlain to be elected as the company's captain. In Springfield in late April the 12th Illinois Infantry was organized, and Chetlain's company was added to it. On May 2 he entered the Union Army as captain of the 12th Illinois, and the next day, he was elected the regiment's lieutenant colonel.

FIRST EDITION. Frontispiece portrait. Green cloth, patterned end-papers, spine sunned and frayed, light shelf-wear and soiling to boards; gutters torn, a little loose, otherwise good. First edition of General Chetlain's memoirs. Chetlain (1824-1914) was a long-time friend of Ulysses S. Grant, having served under him during the war, where he attained the rank of Major General. Apparently he was a frequent visitor to Grant's White House, where they spent many an evening playing cards. After the war, he lived in Utah and traveled as a diplomat to Belgium before becoming director of the Chicago Stock Exchange.
