El Pop Wuj (o Popol Vuh, como se lo conoce más), poema m…ito-histórico de los kí-chés de Guatemala, fue calificado con justicia como el principal libro de la América precolombina, aunque habría sido redactado hacia 1550, en lengua kí-ché pero utilizando el alfabeto fonético, por haberse perdido, junto con los sabios, su propia escritura. El original se extravió, quedando sólo la copia que fray Francisco Jiménez hizo en las postrimerías del siglo XVII, antes de acometer la primera tra-ducción. Hubo después otras, y no sólo al castella-no, pero todas realizadas por clérigos e intelec-tuales no indígenas. Para Adrián I. Chávez, en cambio, el kí-ché es su lengua materna, desde que se trata del primer maestro indígena que tuvo su país. Su castellano, ríspido e imperfecto, es el que usa su pueblo y no los eruditos, lo que le confiere un peculiar sabor, así como un rumor de piedras que nos arrastra hacia una poesía desnuda. Pero lo más valioso es la descolonización del texto sagrado en que se empeña, que va desde su nombre y estructura (desaparece la división en partes y capítulos) a la naturaleza de los personajes, que no se dan ya en pares o gemelos. Chávez depuró así la Antigua Palabra para ponerla al servicio de la Nueva Palabra, la que guía a su pueblo en esta hora tan difícil de su historia. La aparición del presente libro constituye un acontecimiento cultural de gran magnitud en América.
