This copy, hand-numbered 391 and signed by editor Carl S. Driver, presents as a well-preserved e…xample of this desirable Americana reprint of the scarce 1807 London original. The work offers a vivid and often candid English perspective on the early United States, with observations on politics, society, and daily life during the 1790s and early 1800s. Illustrated with reproductions of the original engraved plates - including views of Philadelphia, Boston, and Mount Vernon - the volume remains both historically significant and visually engaging. Press of the Pioneers editions are increasingly collected for their role in preserving scarce early Americana texts in finely produced limited printings, and this title stands as one of the more sought-after travel narratives in the series. Condition is Very Good-. The binding is firm and square with intact hinges; black cloth boards show moderate edge wear, light rubbing, and minor fraying at the corners and spine ends. The spine bears a small library number marking. The text block is clean and unmarked with evenly toned pages throughout. Rear endpapers show abrasion and remnants from removal of library materials, with a tear to the rear flyleaf consistent with deaccessioning. The pictorial ex-library bookplate remains intact and particularly attractive, adding a distinctive layer of period institutional provenance rather than detracting from presentation. No dust jacket was issued. Edition points include the 1935 Press of the Pioneers imprint, statement 'Reprinted from the London Edition of 1807,' signed limitation page, and inclusion of engraved plate reproductions. Despite its ex-library status, the combination of signed limited issue, strong Americana subject matter, and appealing provenance places this copy firmly within the collectible range. Charles William Janson was an English traveler whose 1807 account of the United States provides a candid and often critical perspective on the early republic. Writing as an outsider, he documented social customs, politics, and regional distinctions during a formative period in American history. His work remains an important primary source for understanding transatlantic views of the young nation.

Book protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper._____CONDITION: Slight fading to spine. Few areas of rubbing along edges of spine. Rubbing to leather and marbled paper along bottom edges. Text block firm and square. No markings or ex-libris. Light even toning involving pages in front of book, light spotting (foxing) involving a handful of pages but foxing is notably absent throughout most of book. Pages lightly toned at margin edges. Lower front edge of pg. 486 torn and missing (see photo). Majority of pages clean and white. Overall, a highly collectible copy._____DISCUSSION: An interesting look at the fledgling enterprise known as the United States of America from a British visitor's perspective beginning only 17 years after the founding of our nation in 1793. Charles Hanson's travels took him from Philadelphia and New England to the South, including Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. Hanson was not impressed and his caustic comments extend equally to North and South, i.e., Hanson was an equal opportunity hater of the United States, geographically speaking, and his caustic comments were probably flavored by his unsuccessful business dealings, which include being defrauded in the Yazoo land scheme in Georgia. Nevertheless, this is a valuable historical document with many astute observations, especially with regard to the treatment of Native Americans, African-Americans, and the working classes and the dichotomy in a nation proclaiming itself a democracy._____NOTE: Domestic shipping with UPS Ground is $25. A "handsomely produced book the view on the engraved title page is the earliest known published image of the White House, and the Mount Vernon plate is one of the earliest of Washington's home. The appendix to the book contains what appears to be the first British printing of Thomas Jefferson's December 1806 message announcing the completion of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as other western explorations. This seems to have been unnoticed by bibliographers" (Federal Hundred). The author was an Englishman who lived in America from 1793-1805 and did not like what he saw. "Janson draws a picture of unrelieved black, but one worthy of attention because of the length of his stay and the breadth of his interests. He covers an astonishing variety of subjects" (Clark), from bear attacks and the ungovernable bees of the Carolinas to the American church and other "Yankee notions".
