This is Volume XXXI in the series, Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society. It contains transcriptions of letters that were originally written by Charles John Brydges from 1879-1882. Brydges was a Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Land Commissioner and the successor to Donald A. Smith. His letters from 1879-1882 represent a time of great change for HBC but also one of relative economic prosperity. The years 1879-1882 were still within the time period of the Canadian land boom where land sales brought HBC much financial wealth. At the time, there were discussions in HBC about refocusing the business approach to prioritize land sales instead of the sales of furs, especially as competition within the fur trade industry had only increased over the years. Notably, modernization was fast sweeping across Canada, and HBC was experiencing some difficulties in keeping up with the times. The mid- to late-nineteenth century was also a period of significant political change in Canada. For example, the 1870 Deed of Surrender, a transcription of which is included herein, coincided with the establishment of Manitoba as a Canadian province which affected HBC business operations. Brydges took an approach that sought to meet the needs of an increasing population, development of the Canadian wilderness, and changes in contemporary politics. In turn, he implemented projects that focused on modernizing business practices and infrastructure. Brydges's letters generally represent the HBC's economic prosperity at the time and discuss subjects such as land sales and the development of infrastructure such as bridges, steamboat transportation, and properties such as retail stores, mills, and hotels. Three Appendices in back: "Appendix A: Deed of Surrender, 1870," "Appendix B: Observations by Sandford Fleming, 1882," and "Appendix C: Report by William Armit, 1882." Front colophon: "This copy is No. [blank] of a limited Edition which is issued only to subscribers to The Hudson's Bay Record Society.".

Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for a slight lean in the binding where the front cover is slightly skewed toward the spine and slight wear to extremities. Binding is tight. Dust jacket is very clean and intact overall but has light age toning, slight bumping and edge wear, and tape residue on back panel. A Fine book in a Fine dust jacket. This is Volume XXXIII in the series, Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society. It contains transcriptions of letters that were originally written by Charles John Brydges from 1883-1889. Brydges was a Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Land Commissioner. This volume picks up from where Volume XXXI left off, the latter of which contained transcriptions of his letters from 1879-1882 (not included in this volume). In his Preface, editor Hartwell Bowsfield explains that Brydge's letters are divided between the two volumes at 1882 because that year marked the collapse of the Canadian land boom and a subsequent shift in the activities of HBC's Land Department. Brydges's letters in this volume focus on matters such as collecting overdue installment and interest payments from land speculators and others who had purchased during the land boom and taken on too much risk. As a counterpoint, his letters from 1879-1882 had focused on land sales and development of infrastructure such as bridges, steamboat transportation, and properties such as retail stores, mills, and hotels. From 1883-1889, Brydges was under tremendous pressure to cut expenses in the Land Department. In a word, Brydges's letters in this volume reflect a time of economic depression. Front colophon: "This copy is No. [blank] of a limited Edition which is issued only to subscribers to The Hudson's Bay Record Society.".

Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 2 volumes. lxxxii+380+xiv pages with frontispiece and index. lxxxiv+328+[xviii members] pages with frontispiece, appendices, maps (one folding) and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and Hud…son Bay Coat of Arms to cover in original jackets. Volumes XXXI and XXXIII. First editions. In January 1879 through his managerial reputation and continuing connections within the Tory party, Brydges began a new career in the Hudson s Bay Company. Nominally land commissioner of the HBC, he was secretly authorized by the governor, the deputy governor (Sir John Rose), and the board of the company to follow the principle of consolidation in a new context. He should progressively take over all company operations, including land, furs, supplies, and stores, thus supplanting Donald Alexander Smith* and others and creating what was in effect a more varied and comprehensive chief commissionership. Ironically, Brydges company years coincided with Smith s rise as liaison officer between Ottawa, the HBC, and the Canadian Pacific Railway, climaxed by Smith becoming the HBC s largest shareholder and governor. As Brydges most exacting assignment, his connection with the HBC produced strains which would precipitate his death but it also held its triumphs. Condition: Corners bumped. Jacket volume XXXI lightly soiled else near fine in a fine jackets.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the vast wilderness of Manitoba and the Northwest, highlighting their abundant resources and agricultural potential. Written during a time of great westward expansion, the author paints a vivid picture of these untamed lands. The text emphasizes the region's ferti…le soil, suitable for wheat and grazing, making it a prime destination for settlers seeking a prosperous future. The presence of rivers and lakes ensures a steady water supply, while the lack of dense forests simplifies land clearing. The author also highlights the region's economic prospects, with the construction of a railway line promising to connect it to major markets. Overall, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the region's geography, resources, and opportunities, encouraging exploration and settlement in these promising lands. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
