Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an insightful look into the United States Navy during the American Civil War, a time of great innovation and adaptation in naval warfare. The author, with access to official documents and firsthand accounts, chronicles the Navy's extraordinary growth and transformation, from its humble beginnings to its role as a formidable force that would shape the course of the war and redefine naval combat for years to come. The book explores the Navy's technological advancements, including the development of the ironclad warship, and the strategic decisions that led to the successful blockade of Confederate ports. It also sheds light on the Navy's humanitarian efforts, particularly its role in protecting escaped slaves and its early adoption of a policy of racial equality. By delving into the complexities and challenges of naval warfare during this transformative period, this book offers a fresh perspective on the Civil War and its lasting impact on the United States Navy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This offering is a set of the two volumes that make up the books in The History of the Navy During the Rebellion. The books were written by Charles B. Boynton and are "illustrated with numerous engravings." (and several color plates of ships of the time) It's a two volume set. Each of the books is only in good condition and neither of the books have a dust jacket, I'm fairly certain that they never did. Both are ex-library copies and DO have library markings, and library wear . . . though I do believe they had minimal outside of the library use as they were in the Reference and Memorial sections for most of their stay. Each volume is 6 1/8" by 9 1/4" with blue boards that have The Hartford embossed in gold on the front. THIS time the library did well. They reinforced the spines/binding with red masking tape, and clear plastic tape, and that has helped preserve them quite a bit. HOWEVER the bindings/spines are VERY brittle, and could give in and split quite easily. For the collector, it might be worth your while to have them rebound nicely as the texts and illustrations in both are really quite nicely preserved . . . particularly given their age. The books were published by D. Appleton and Company - Volume I in 1870 and Volume II in 1869. They may not both be Firsts, but they're darn close. Volume I has 576 glossy pages with a Table of Contents, and Volume II has 580 glossy pages with a Table of Contents. I just noticed that in Volume II there ARE a few pages with ink marks on them . . . including the color illustrations of the First Rates. What a shame! Nevertheless, for nearly 150 years of service these books are in really nice shape. There are not too many complete sets from the 1800's out there for sale, and few are in as nice of condition as this one. Not perfect, but nice. Thank you.…
