Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps, tables, (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Land, the Lake and the People 1864-1964" this local history marks two important milestones --- the centennial of local government in the Ellesmere district and the amalgamation in 1963 of the council with adjacent local authorities. This well produced and well written book records the development of the district from its ancient Maori connection to the first European associations from the 1840s, leading to early settlers, including run and runholders, the development of agriculture and associated activities and the advent of community organisations, including the various boards from which the county council evolved in 1911. A chapter is devoted these boards in "Some Ad Hoc Bodies." Naturally, the importace to the area of its iconic of Lake Ellesmere, is given significent attention, as are community and civic facilities, education, recreation and cultural organisatiions that came with a stable population, commercial activity, consolidation and infrastructure provision. A fine example of excellence in the local history genre. First edition by the Elllesmere County Council in 1965, printed by Caxton Press of Christchurch, 221 pages incuding six appendices and index, 40+ b/w photographs, including one map and portraits, plus one fold-out map. Blue hard covers with red spine titles have light partial mottling at edges both boards with light spotting to spine area. Ink gift inscription top FFEP with two small tape marks below where news paper clipping (loosely enclosed) had been fixed, otherwise internally excellent. Unclipped colour tone DJ has aerial photo to front panel extending partially to rear panel and is VG+ with few chips spine top,
