Having been a school teacher, he was blessed with writing ability and used his talent to record observations and experiences while fighting in the ranks. He served more than two years as a sergeant with Company B, 46th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry. While his account provides an open window to the hopes, dreams and fears of one Confederate enlisted man, it also chronicles nearly the entire history of his company and regiment through three years of daily life in camp, on the march and in battles fought in Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama.
