The first 8 volumes consists of the plays themselves, "Accurately printed from the text of the corrected copies left by the late George Steevens and Edmond Malone with Mr. Malone's various readings; a selection of explanatory and historical notes, from the most eminent commentators; A History of the Stage, and a Life of Shakspeare by Alexander Chalmers." The final volume, 9, is an Index, edited by Reverand Samuel Ayscough ("An Index to the Remarkable Passages and Words Made Use of By Shakspeare; Calculated to Point Out the Different Meanings to Which the Words are Applied.")     Hardcover. NY 1853 (1st) First edition thus (NAP no copyright) preceeding London ed of 1854. Complete 6 vol set bound in 1/4 leather and marbelized boards. All 6 vols have tape repaired spines with small paper labels. Text is a bit age darkened but unfoxed All have a nice bookplate depicting a hunting scene and the previous owner's signature. The leather is worn but the marelized paper on the bo ards is in relatively nice condition apart from vol II where there are bits of cardboard stuck on a few spots. The eps are foxed. Vol I has a significant front hinge crack a c. 1 x 1 inch light tan st ain on the lower inside corners of the first fifth of the text and a contemporary newspaper clipping about Addison's daughter affixed into the seam of the last page of the index. Vol II is shaken leat her off the spine. And the boards are becoming detached. There are some fairly light tan stains throughout the text which is slightly wavy. The first 8 volumes consists of the plays themselves, "Accurately printed from the text of the corrected copies left by the late George Steevens and Edmond Malone with Mr. Malone's various readings; a selection of explanatory and historical notes, from the most eminent commentators; A History of the Stage, and a Life of Shakspeare by Alexander Chalmers." The final volume, 9, is an Index, edited by Reverand Samuel Ayscough ("An Index to the Remarkable Passages and Words Made Use of By Shakspeare; Calculated to Point Out the Different Meanings to Which the Words are Applied.")
