Quarter cloth. Condition: Fair. No dj. First Edition. Presentation inscription, "Presented by Order of the Syndicate of the Cambridge Observatory to the Observatory at Glasgow". The handwriting does not appear to match another sample of Challis' writing we have seen. Front hinge sprung, holding by one binding tape. Rear hinge th…e same. Pages clean, minor foxing to prelims, general shelfwear and splitting to cloth , basically a wreck but text block firm. With Glasgow Observatory stamp to title page. Mostly transit observation tables, rear section contains observations in 1848 of the recently discovered Neptune, in the prior search for which Challis played a role. He had actually recorded Neptune twice, a month before its official discovery date in September 1846, but did not follow up with charts and make the connection. This volume contains transit observations from the month in question, though not the Neptune record. Quite a detailed section on the reduction of the observations, which makes more interesting reading than the observations themselves. LXIX+357pp. Size: Folio.
