Il nome deriva dalla piccola città di Barcelonnetta, nelle basse Alpi, da cui partirono molti francesi per far fortuna in messico. Il primo sembra sia stato un certo Arnaud, nel 1821: chiuse una filanda di seta che aveva sul posto, e si associò in Messico con un altro francese per aprire il Cajon de ropa de las siete puertas, il Magazzino di tessuti delle Sette Porte.
