A pseudonymous mystery thriller (one of just four standalone novels that he wrote alongside his series of 'Nigel Strangeways' detective novels).

Lewis, C. Day [Cecil Day-Lewis (or Day Lewis) CBE (27 April 1904 - 22 May 1972), often writing as C. Day-Lewis, was an Anglo-Irish poet and the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1968 until his death in 1972. He also wrote mystery stories under the pseudonym of Nicholas Blake]. Illustrated by Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone, CBE RA (16 October 1900 - 8 November 1979), who sometimes signed his work "DIZ", was a British painter, printmaker and war artist, and the author and illustrator of books, many of them for children.

The… poet laureate, Cecil Day Lewis wrote a number of detective works under the name Nicholas Blake, of which this title is by far the best regarded. Copies of this UK printing in this condition with the jacket are extremely uncommon.
